Paris Photography Tour (November 7-10th 2019)

Paris Photography Tour (November 7-10th 2019)

from 350.00

Paris ‘The City of Light’, is one of the most romantic cities in the world, known globally for its history, architecture, food, art and culture! The city has famously inspired many artists, photographers and writers for centuries.

We will explore both beautiful, traditional views, as well as the less trodden ‘inspired-by-locals’ scenes, offering a great balance between the grand spectacle of Paris and the charming reality of a modern city.

This photography tour is conveniently timed so that we can visit ‘Paris Photo’, the largest Photo Exhibition in Europe. Artists from around the world are invited to exhibit in Paris’s stunning Grand Palais. All genre’s and styles of photography will be represented, with some of the most exciting, contemporary work on display. We will use this as an opportunity to talk about ‘project’ or ‘narrative’ photography, and how you can create your own body of work going forward.

This tour is aimed at people inspired by the works of famous photographers such as Cartier Bresson, who want to photograph the beating heart of the city. It is also aimed at people who want to improve and broaden their photographic knowledge, understanding and repertoire.

Thursday 7th

We will meet in the Hotel at 12pm, where I will discuss details of the tour ahead, answer any questions you may have and we will all get to know each other. I will have a brief (15 minutes) 1-1 with each participant, so I can gauge your knowledge, goals and challenges you hope to overcome. This will help me to target teaching and experiences to every member of the group. Everyone can check in from 2pm so we will do this before we head out.

We will then head out at about 3pm to walk our way over to the sunset location. On the way we will indulge in street and architecture photography, capturing the majesty of the Parisian streets.

View of Paris from Montparnasse Tower at Sunset

Standing 210 meters tall, Montparnasse Tower is the tallest building and the only skyscraper in central Paris.

Its proportions and out of place architecture have been a favourite topic of criticism and ridicule, with locals famously stating that it is a place with the most beautiful view in Paris because it’s the only spot from where the building itself cannot be seen! It is undeniable however, that you get a stunning view of the city, with the Eiffel Tower as a centre point. We will photograph here at sunset (17:22), through into blue hour, where the sky deepens and the lights of the city come alive. I will be on hand to help you capture stunning pictures of the Paris cityscape.

Following this we will all go out for dinner together, to experience some delicious traditional French food!

Friday 8th

Everyone will have a free morning, as the exhibition does not open until 12. I may well be going out to photograph at Dawn - you are more than welcome to join me. You have the option to do something different here if you want to!

Paris Photo Exhibition

“Paris Photo, the first international fair dedicated to the photographic medium, is held every year under the glass roof of the Grand Palais in Paris. Since 1997, the fair has been developing and supporting photographic creation by promoting the work of gallery owners, publishers and artists.

Paris Photo brings together nearly 200 exhibitors from around the world, offering collectors and art lovers a complete panorama of photography. Emerging and confirmed galleries exhibit historical and contemporary works ranging from modern masterpieces to young talents. Specialist publishers as well as art book merchants present rare and limited editions, book launches as well as numerous signatures with leading contemporary artists.”

Together we will explore this historic exhibition, and fully experience all aspects of contemporary photographic art. Many genre’s of photography will be shown here, so there is something for everyone. As we walk around, we will have discussions around narrative photography (how to tell a story with your work), as well as how to make your own projects. This will be an inspiring day, which sets you up for the rest of the tour as well as your photography going forward!

Saturday 9th

L’ile De La Cite / Louvre at Sunrise

We will begin the morning by photographing the famous pyramid of the Louvre, and its surrounding courtyard. The stairs around the court which lead downwards make for interesting compositional elements. From here we will walk over to the Pont des Arts for traditional views of the river. Then we will ‘chase the light’ along the banks of the Seine towards Notre-Dame. Along the river, typical romantic Parisian views will greet us. Cyclists, couples and locals will all be lit in the golden morning light, offering fantastic street photography opportunities. Once we arrive near Notre Dame, we will explore the markets, which are full of life, art and characters!

You will have a free late morning - early afternoon to explore as you wish. If you would like a post production session I am more than happy to run one. This will be surveyed the night before and will take place in the hotel.

La Défense at Sunset

In the afternoon and sunset we will visit Paris’s business district La Défense. We will be focused on architecture and urban landscape photography, as a distinct departure from the traditional sights of central Paris. As the sun sets, we will be set up on tripods to capture the light trails of cars as they snake under the blue-yellow of the skyscrapers.

“La Défense is light years away from the gothic architecture of Notre Dame, the classic Hausmannian boulevards, or the cobble stoned streets of Montmartre. However, as a pedestrian area it offers quiet corners away from the loud traffic, interesting pocket gardens, and lots of modern art. The whole place is in fact an outdoor museum with over 60 modern sculptures by renowed artists like Juan Miro, Alexander Calder, César and many others, making it the perfect place to see art for free with no one to tell you off for touching or taking pictures!”

Sunday 10th

Montmatre and Sacre Coeur

Clinging to the northern hill of Paris, Montmartre has long been associated with the artistic community that lived there and is still known for its small village atmosphere. Painters such as Picasso, Modigliani, Van Gogh and many others lived, worked and been inspired by this area.

A few steps away, crowds gather on the place du Tertre where artists set their easels among the restaurant tables and umbrellas.

We will want to go beyond the square to get away from the crowds and enjoy the little winding back streets and quiet corners. In the further reaches of Montmartre are additional photo opportunities for wonderful, timeless Parisian scenes such as romantic stairs, narrow cobblestone streets and traditional Parisian lamp posts.

Our tour will conclude at 3 PM, giving everyone ample time to get home in the evening.

London Group Image Review / Skype - Saturday November 23rd (+ FREE Print)

If you are available to attend, we will meet on Saturday November 23rd (or do this via skype) to review each others images. This is after the tour concludes, as people need time to edit and reflect on the images they have captured. If you are able to send me an image in advance, that you want printed (the RAW if you want me to edit it or your own processed image) I will have this ready to give you at the session. If not, I will have it shipped to you.

At an image review session, we as a group we will give feedback to each other regarding our images. We will discuss what you are doing well, what can be improved and what to focus on in the future. This will give you purpose when going out to shoot and in your edit. You can only improve if you are aware of what needs improving! It is a fantastic learning session where you will get invaluable feedback on composition, colour, thought process, editing, and much more.

If you are unable to attend I will arrange to either meet you in London, or via skype and we can do an image review one-to-one.

We will be staying at the lovely Art Hotel Eiffel, which recently won the Loved by Guests Award 2018 (
